The Hundred Dresses Class 10 Extra Question Answers | CBSE Question Bank

Q10 Answer in 20-30 words (2 Marks)
i What, according to Room Thirteen, was ‘unusual’ about Wanda?
ANS: According to Room Thirteen, Wanda had a funny and unusual name. Despite being quiet she sat in the corner of the room where the rough boys with loud laughter used to sit. She wore the same dress every day to school.

ii Briefly justify Peggy’s popularity.
ANS: Peggy was the most popular girl in school. She was pretty looking. She had many beautiful dresses and her hair was curly. Besides, she sat with toppers in the front row. She saved children from bullies.

iii Why was Wanda’s claim to a hundred dresses incongruent with what she wore to school most days?
ANS: She claimed to have a hundred dresses in her closet but she wore the same faded blue dress to the school daily. Also, the dress was unironed.

iv Peggy and Maddie often waited for Wanda, to have ‘fun’ with her. How was this concept of ‘fun’ different from how we commonly know it?
ANS: They both waited there to make fun of Wanda’s poverty by asking questions about her dress and shoes. Commonly, we know ‘Fun’ as a light conversation for entertainment.

The Hundred Dresses Class 10 | CBSE Question Bank | Competency Based Questions

Q11 Answer in 40-50 words (3 Marks)

i Wanda was not only different from the other students of her class but even from the other students at the back of the class where she sat. Explain how this was so.
ANS: Wanda always sat in the row next to the last row. But she was different from the rough boys who sat at the back of the class. Unlike the noisy boys, she was very quiet and rare heard saying anything. She was never heard laughing out loud like the boys sitting at the back of the class.

ii The drawing and colouring contest involved girls designing dresses and boys designing motorboats.
a) Does it reveal any common perception about girls and boys?
b) What do you feel about the same?
ANS: a) Yes, the statement reveals that girls are perceived to be more inclined towards fashion and makeup whereas boys like machines or engineering.
b) This perception does not hold good in today’s modern world. There is no gender inequality between boys and girls in the choice of professions.

iii What does the reaction of the two girls, at the announcement of Wanda’s name as the winner of the girls’ medal, tell us about them?
ANS: Peggy and Maddie did not feel jealous of the announcement of Wanda’s name as the winner of the girls’ medal. Rather they admired her paintings and colour contrast. This attitude shows that they did not intend to embarrass Wanda by asking ‘the hundred dress question’ repeatedly.

iv Maddie had her own reason to feel embarrassed on occasion when Wanda was teased about her dresses. If you were Maddie, how would you have addressed the situation?
ANS: If I were Maddie, I would have tried to convince Peggy that these questions might hurt a poor girl. So, it was not good to ask personal questions. I would have tried to divert the students’ focus to something else.

v Explain how wearing a school uniform might have addressed the problem/s faced by Maddie and Wanda regarding their dresses.
ANS: After wearing a school uniform, any student cannot comment on others’ dresses. Every student looks almost similar in a school uniform. Yes, school uniforms would have definitely addressed the problem faced by poor girls like Maddie and Wanda regarding their dresses.

The Hundred Dresses Part 1 Long Question Answer | Class 10 CBSE Question Bank

Q12 Answer in 100-120 words (beyond text and across texts) (5 Marks)
i As a student from a different class (Room Eleven), write a diary entry about the behaviour of Peggy and Maddie with Wanda, in the light of the given quotes. You may begin like this:

“Judging a person does not define who they are.

It defines who you are.”

“Silence is unacceptable in the face of injustice and being neutral is being a coward and an accomplice.”

Dear Diary,
I have been watching the goings-on of Peggy and Maddie every morning for a while now I am going to report the matter……

07 July 1944, Tuesday 7:30 pm
Dear diary,
I have been watching the goings-on of Peggy and Maddie every morning for a while now. I am going to report the matter to Miss Mason. Judging a person on the basis of his/her clothes is not the right criterion. Enough is enough now. My father taught me that one who keeps silent in the face of injustice is termed a coward. My conscience is pricking and compelling me to speak against this unfair game. It is our moral duty to support the underprivileged and less fortunate class of society. I will definitely let the teacher know of this dress game so that Wanda get rid of it as soon as possible. I would request the teacher to explain moral duties in the class lecture so that Peggy and other children belonging to the higher social class use their position and resources for the welfare of the poor and needy; instead of bullying them.
Bye, dear diary.

ii Despite her picking on Wanda and leading the group in doing so, Peggy was someone who shielded younger children from bullies and cried at the mistreatment of animals. Do you think that most people in the world are like Peggy –very aware of several issues but quite unfeeling when it comes to dealing with someone ‘different?
Present your views and include the importance of being self-aware, lest we hurt others due to our thoughtlessness.

ANS: I think that most people in the world are like Peggy who shows off as concerned and aware of social issues. But, cannot empathise with someone’s real problems. Their behaviour is totally different when actual dealing comes.
It is extremely important to be self-aware and thoughtfully deal with others. We must anticipate our words before speaking. Our actions should not leave a negative or sarcastic effect on someone. Although Peggy did not want to upset Wanda, her asking personal questions was not acceptable. Peggy could not self evaluate her behaviour. So, the teacher and the classmates should have intervened to let Peggy realise her mistakes and apologise to Wanda.

iii If Wanda had to choose one friend from among Anne Frank, Amanda and Valli, who do you think she would have chosen? Explain with relevant rationale and reference to the texts.
ANS:  I think Wanda would select Anne Frank. She would select Anne because they both suffered from social problems and could better understand each other’s grief. Wanda faced social discrimination in the US whereas Anne was forced to stay in confinement due to Nazism in Germany. Wanda, herself, was a creative girl who would admire the writing skills of Anne Frank.
Valli would also be a great friend to Wanda. As Wanda was a shy girl and spoke too little, Valli would compliment her as a companion. Valli was a brave and self-respecting girl. Wanda could learn to speak for her rights from Valli and live a respectable life.
