What is Make in India Project?
Make in India is a national programme of the government of India. It is designed to bring foreign investments, enhance skill development, protect intellectual property and build best in class manufacturing infrastructure in the globe and strengthen India’s manufacturing sector.
In his first Independence Day speech on August 15, 2014, Modi said, “I want to tell the people of the whole world: Come, make in India. Come and manufacture in India. We have the skill, talent, discipline and the desire to do something. We want to give the world an opportunity to manufacture in India.

When was Make in India Launched
Indian prime minister Mr Narender Modi formally introduced it on 25th September 2014 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Many business giants of India were present there at that time. The focus of this program is on 25 sectors (originally it was on 16). The programme aims to increase the share of the manufacturing sector to 25 per cent of GDP and to create 100 million additional jobs in the manufacturing sector by the year 2022.
It was perfectly timed. Trade-related tensions were going on between China and America. Investors were in a state of confusion. They were looking for a country with a stable government and ample resources. Now, they could rely on Modi’s powerful personality after BJP’s absolute electoral mandate. Therefore, we can say that the launch of Make in India initiative was well-timed.

Progress of Make in India in 5 Years
In a short span of time, the obsolete and obstructive frameworks of the past have been replaced with a user-friendly system. This is bringing FDIs (Foreign Direct Investment) and building best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure.
Across various regions of the country; six industrial corridors are being developed. Industrial Cities will also come up along these corridors.
DPIIT ( Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade ) has set up a special management team to facilitate and fast track the investment proposals. They are currently known as ‘Japan Plus’ and ‘Korea plus.’
‘Make in India’ appears to be doing exceedingly well in some sectors. Mobile phone manufacturers’ market leader Samsung last year moved one of its largest manufacturing set-ups from China to Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Apple and Xiaomi have invested seriously in Indian manufacturing capacity.
Improvement Needed in Make in India
Although many foreign investors are interested in deals with India. We have still not reached the targets set for this programme. It is felt that the Government does not walk its talk. Labour reforms and policy reforms which are fundamental for the success of this programme have not been implemented. Manufacturing share of GDP has not increased significantly. And the same is valid for job status. To touch the targets, our government need to pay attention to the following points:
- Availability of high-end talent
- Securing better raw materials
- Acquiring technology
- Innovative Ideas
